Deb’s Desk: Maximalism + Iris Apfel

Deb’s Desk: Maximalism + Iris Apfel

SCOUT HQ: Spreading the Love with Georgetown Hospital Reading Deb’s Desk: Maximalism + Iris Apfel 2 minutes

This week we honor the “Matriarch of Maximalism,” Iris Apfel, as Deb shares her key images and musings from a visit to Christies. In January, the institution debuted “Unapologetically Iris: The Collection of Iris Apfel.” With her oversized glasses, big bangles, and bold style, Iris is an inspiration to all of us at SCOUT HQ, especially Deb. Honestly, Deb is kind of a version of our own personal Iris. Fabulous? Colorful? Textile and design oriented? Yes.

At this time, Christies is offering hundreds of items from the bold and luminous textile entrepreneur and fashion icon’s personal collection online, further giving collectors a chance to own treasures from her homes in New York and South Beach. As you can see, this exhibition is truly jaw dropping. From peacock sculptures with a hidden bar to her vast collection of rich wardrobe items and jewelry, the personality and personal style is unmatched.

In 1951, Iris founded a textile company with her husband, Carl (sounds oddly familiar…), which became one of the most renowned and respected brands in the industry. This exotic textile background inevitably paved her foray into fashion icon status and traveling the globe with her husband further fueled her love of funky and fun self-styling.

Ornamental jewelry and clothing inspired by other cultures became the blueprint for unabashed personal style. By pulling from all corners of the globe, Iris created a maximalist look with staples featuring her trademark, oversized glasses in her golden years.

Speaking of golden years, Iris signed with IMG at 97 years old and modeled for Vogue. She’s achieved rock star status in the world of fashion and has become somewhat of an involuntary influencer for many trends. This West Palm diva has an impact rooted in true style, and was, perhaps the original fashion influencer, if you will. Anyway, we digress…Our final wish would be that Iris may inspire you all to live colorfully this week and have a little unapologetic fun. You owe it to yourselves!
