Travel Guide: Idyllic Nantucket

The time has arrived for early morning walks to Jetties Beach, hydrangeas in full bloom, family dinners al fresco, and summer memories becoming sacred heirlooms. The Johns' are back in Nantucket and Deb’s bucket list has been patiently waiting for checks. Grab your beach cruiser as we roll through Deb’s favorite summer activities on the island.

Quality time with family is a must upon first descent into ACK or drive off the ferry. This is priority number one for the Johns clan as morning workouts for the family are led by Gussie, pickleball teams are formed, new beach spots are selected, and lunches and dinners are prepped. There are two kinds of people: people who love game nights and people who avoid the competition at all costs. The Johns' are the former as a family of rockstars, athletes, and mega-minds. Of course, the goal is to reward the team afterwards with a local sweet treat.

There’s a very distinct flavor in the town of Nantucket, and Deb has her personal favorite haunts. A post-beach-walk breakfast at Black Eyed Susans, trip to Wicked Island Bakery for all things baked and divine, grabbing beach food at Fresh deli, dinner out at The Proprietors Bar & Table, and after-dinner ice cream at Sconset Market are her must-tries, to name just a few.

Visits with old and new friends are made especially magical in this idyllic community. Everyone’s welcome to eat “brinner” (breakfast for dinner) al fresco on Deb and Ben’s back lawn. This is a Johns family favorite. With access to local farmstand produce and specialty markets, brinner would be anyone’s fav. The natural treasures are abundant, and Flowers on Chestnut is a must during a Saturday morning “brunch and touch.” After you’ve had your brekky and grabbed a fabulous iced latte to go for your walk around town, Deb recommends popping in and marveling at their stunning flowers. Inside you’ll fantasize about a life being a wedding planner or Martha Stewart.

Let's call a spade a spade. Nantucket is a utopia. But the greatest gift of this place is packing up the memories spent with friends and family summer after summer. No matter where you go, this season will forever have a warm buzz and glow. And, we wish we could bottle up and spray that around the house whenever we’re feeling blue. We hope you’ll keep enjoying life’s colorful adventures and sharing them with us. If you make it up to Massachusetts, go buy that ferry ticket too.
